Greater Phoenix's main airport, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, is nicknamed America's Friendliest Airport. With over 45 million passengers a year and more than 120 domestic and international destinations, it is one of the busiest airports in the country. There are approximately 1200 flights per day at Sky Harbor, which makes it one of the most convenient airports in the country.

 

Southwest and American Airlines both have hubs at Sky Harbor.

The number of passengers traveling through Sky Harbor increased to more than 462 million in 2019.

A $38 billion economic impact is attributed to Sky Harbor.

Sky Harbor was purchased by Phoenix in July 1935 for $100000. $35300 was paid in cash and $64700 was financed.

 

GENERAL FACTS

In Greater Phoenix, there are more than 160 golf clubs with more than 185 different golf courses.

 

A number of hotels and resorts in the greater Phoenix area have also been awarded Five Diamonds or Four Diamonds, and Five Star or Four Star rating.

Phoenix is 75 minutes' drive away from six lakes.

South Mountain Park and Preserve covers more than 16000 acres and includes more than 50 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails.

One of the most valuable collections of American Indian artifacts in the country is that of the Heard Museum, which has the largest collection of kachina dolls in the country (donated in part by Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater).

As a result, Phoenix receives 804 inches of rainfall each year, averages 7505 degrees and has an annual high temperature of 867 degrees. Winter averages 67 degrees.

Phoenix experiences more sunshine than any other major metro area in the U.S., with the sun shining 85 percent of the time during daylight hours.

 

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

During the early 1860s, the Salt River was used as the riverbed for the settlement that later became Phoenix.

 

Phoenix is named after one of its first settlers, Cambridge-educated pioneer Darrell Duppa, who predicted that a great city would arise from the ancient Hohokam ruins like the legendary bird that rose from its own ashes.

 

Native American tribes are represented by 22 sovereign tribes in Arizona.

 

Phoenix was first settled by the Hohokam Indians. A record of the Hohokam tribe does not exist after 1450 A.D., although they are considered ancestors of the Pima. Those who have gone are called hohokam in the Pima language.

 

Phoenix became a city on May 4, 1868, when the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors created an election precinct.

As Arizona's first governor, George W. P. Hunt was elected on Feb. 14, 1912.

Over 55,000 jobs were affected by visitor spending in Phoenix in 2019. Most jobs in Phoenix are sustained by the visitor economy at 87%.

More than $500 million was generated through direct, indirect, and induced impacts from Phoenix visitors.

 

The top five activities performed by visitors to Phoenix overnight include shopping, fine dining, visiting a state or Phoenix national park, hiking/backpacking, and visiting landmarks.

In 2019, visitors in the region spent more than $167 billion in direct spending.

Approximately 115000 jobs were affected in the region by visitor spending in 2019.

An estimated $15 billion in state and local taxes were raised by Greater Phoenix area visitors through direct, indirect, and induced impacts.
