Papago Park

Just minutes away from downtown and the airport is great outdoor recreation. You can hike around the red buttes in Papago Park, including the Hole-in-the-Rock Trail; fish in seven acres of stocked fishing lagoons; play a round at Papago Golf Course; or visit the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden nearby.

Phoenix history has been represented by Phoenix Papago Park: it was a reservation for indigenous tribes, a fish hatchery in the Great Depression, a POW camp during WWII, and a VA hospital. The park is home to The Phoenix Zoo, Desert Botanical Garden, golf courses, museums, baseball fields, lakes, and Sonoran Desert plants and animals.

TRAIL DESCRIPTIONS TRAIL MAP

A typical Papago Park trail features little elevation change and is suitable for walking, hiking, mountain biking, and trail running. There are two sides to the park: east and west. Galvin Parkway splits the park into east and west.

WEST SIDE TRAILS

The attraction offers paved pathways, trails, and loops surrounding a big butte and small butte. Enjoy the park's 23-mile Double Butte Loop. No restrooms are available in Papago Park Drive parking lot. It has a drinking fountain, bike rack, and picnic ramada.

It is open from sunrise to sunset or 7 p.m., whichever comes first, but trails remain open till 11 p.m.

EAST SIDE TRAILS

A short hike inside Hole-in-the-Rock, the park's most popular scenic viewpoint and one of Phoenix's best hikes, offers an introduction to Sonoran Desert flora and fauna. Located here are bathrooms, drinking fountains, and picnic ramadas.

Parking areas and gated roadways are open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., but trails are open until 11 p.m.

HOLE-IN-THE-ROCK TRAIL

The caption for this photo is Tighten up on your reinsYou are runnin' wild, you're runnin' wild, you're a wild one

On the park's east side, this formation features a main chamber that provides a great view (especially at sunset) of nearby lagoons and the distant downtown skyline. A one-tenth mile trail rises 200 feet to reach the chamber. A hole in the rock ceiling is believed to have been used by ancient Hohokam civilization to track the position of the sun.

Distance: 03 miles

The trailhead is located at 625 N. Galvin Parkway in Phoenix, with a parking lot directing you to the formation. You can also walk to other parking lots if parking is unavailable.

A high concentration of people, impressive views of downtown Phoenix and Tempe, and impressive sandstone formations are what you can expect. Trail users are allowed to bring their dogs.

GOVERNOR HUNT'S TOMB

This is a different perspective of Hunt's Tomb than I shared last month in my photo by zachcooleyphoto. The history behind it and the Arizona governor entombed there is pretty fascinating - if you missed it, find it in the story. Have an awesome weekend, everyone!

On a hill, a white pyramid stands as a memorial to Arizona's first governor, George W.P. Hunt. In 1931, Hunt built the tomb for his wife, and upon his death in 1934 he was buried there as well. Other members of his family are also buried there. You can see Hole-in-the-Rock and the Phoenix Zoo inside the Phoenix Zoo if you walk to the top.

NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

Desert Botanical Garden

While some wounds have been closed, many others remain unhealed.

Although life is full of impossible things, this trip taught me that there is still light and beauty between the darkness and cruelty, if you are willing to look for it.

As long as there is hope, there will always be hope.

There is so much to explore at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix that I could spend the whole weekend there. We are home to thousands of cacti, trees, and flowers on more than 55 acres at dbgphx! Besides dirt and tumbleweeds, the desert has much more to offer

Check out the Desert Botanical Garden's annual Las Noches de las Luminarias if you're planning a trip to Arizona this winter! Christmas traditions will be carried out throughout December. Live Christmas music will accompany the lighting of thousands of candles on the desert trails

Desert Botanical Garden

Posted by Raemstaylor, caption reads: I'm 29 today. Life has not just passed me by, but I've basked in it as well. The mistakes I made were not just mistakes, they were lessons I learned. The only thing I did was grow and evolve. I pray that I fulfill God's purpose for my life and am a blessing to others.

A road trip to Arizona, my neighbor to the east, had been on my mind for a long time. Our trip from San Diego to downtown Phoenix took about 7 hours (with breaks).

Visit the top attractions within the park boundaries to make it an enjoyable day. Check out the Sonoran Desert's vast variety of plants at the Desert Botanical Garden; visit all sorts of animals at the Phoenix Zoo; learn more about the state's history at the Arizona Heritage Center; tee off at the Papago Golf Club; or enjoy some family fun at the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting.
